Tire Compatibility

Next to deciding which wheelset to buy, few decisions will impact your performance more than choosing the right tire, and tire pressure. Please take the time to review the section below that corresponds to your wheelset. After you’ve reviewed the notes surrounding tire compatibility with your wheelset, jump on over to our tire pressure page to ensure you’re running the right tire pressure.

ENVE Tip: Trust our tire pressure recommendation chart. The maximum tire pressure ratings on tires are not recommended operating pressures. Running the max pressure will not make you faster, rather, it will actually increase rolling resistance (making you slower) and discomfort (making you slower), jeopardizing the ride experience.

Foundation Collection Tire Compatibility

Tubeless Rim Type: Hookless/Straight-Sidewall
Inner-Tube Compatible: Yes, Only with Tubeless/Tubeless Ready Tire
Inner Rim Width Dimension: 21mm
Aero Optimized Tire Size Recommendation: 25mm-27mm
Tire Size Range Compatibility: ≥ 25mm
Maximum Rim Pressure: 90 psi/6.2 bar (25mm Tire), 80 psi/5.5 bar (>28mm Tire)

Use tires listed as “Approved/Recommended” only with Foundation Collection road wheelsets. For tires listed as “Not Approved/Incompatible” we are working with the tire manufacturers so changes can be made to move tires on to the “Approved/Recommended” list. If a tire you would like to run is not listed, it does not mean that it is incompatible. Rather, we have not tested it yet. In the situation that you choose to run a tire that is not on the “Approved/Recommended” list, you do so at your own risk.

Please refer to our tire pressure recommendation chart for Foundation ENVE 45 and ENVE 65 (21mm Internal Rim Width) wheelsets and never exceed air pressure of 90 psi/6.2 bar for tires sized 25-28mm.

Can’t find the tire you are looking for? Our compatibility data is based on submissions from tire companies. If you are looking for a specific tire and can’t find it on our chart it does not mean that it is not compatible. In fact, many tires have gone through changes and updates to improve compatibility with hookless rim systems. If you don’t see a specific tire on our chart your best option is to contact the tire manufacturer and ask them if their tires are approved for Straight Side Wall (TSS) aka “hookless” rim designs.

Smart ENVE System (SES) Tire Compatibility

Models: SES 2.2, SES 3.4, SES 5.6, SES 7.8, SES Disc Wheel

Tubeless Rim Type: Hooked-Bead
Inner-Tube Compatible: Yes
Inner Rim Width Dimension: 18-20.5mm
Aero Optimized Tire Size Recommendation: 25mm
Tire Size Range Compatibility: 23mm to 32mm
Rim’s Maximum Tire Pressure: 120psi

There are no limitations on tire compatibility with these wheel models. Your ENVE SES wheels may be set up and run with inner-tubes and non-tubeless tires or tubeless (TL) and tubeless ready (TLR) tires alike. We recommend the use of a Tubeless (TL) or Tubeless Ready (TLR) 700x25c tire set up tubeless to maximize aerodynamics, rolling resistance, crosswind stability, and your ride experience.

Non-Tubeless Setup (i.e. I want to run inner-tubes) – Each ENVE SES wheelset is delivered with one roll of RED, model specific, ENVE tested and approved tubeless rim tape. This tape should be installed regardless of whether you intend to run your wheels tubeless or not. Do not run cloth or plastic (including ENVE) non-tubeless compatible rim tape or strips. Plastic rim strips and cloth tapes are too thick, bridge the drop-center rim channel, and will make installation and removal of tires extremely difficult. Click here for our tubeless tape installation video.

Cotton and/or Natural Fiber Sidewall Tires – ENVE does NOT RECOMMEND the use of cotton or natural fiber sidewall non-tubeless tires with ENVE SES wheelsets for everyday use. These tires are intended for high-performance racing applications only. If you choose to run these tires, please inspect your tires after each ride for cuts, tears, and any signs of abrasion and/or wear in the sidewall and at the location of the rim/tire interface. If any wear and/or damage is identified, replace before riding. Riders who choose to run tires with cotton or natural fiber sidewalls do so at their own risk.

For a more optimized setup please visit our Tire Pressure charts to dial in your tire pressure.

Foundation AG Tire Compatibility

Operating pressures required for gravel performance fall well below the max pressure ratings of the G Series and Foundation AG wheel models, the only requirements when choosing a tire to pair with your G Series or Foundation AG model wheels are:

  • Tire must be tubeless compatible (even if you plan to run innertubes).
  • Tire pressure must never exceed the rim’s max pressure rating. These pressures are indicated on the rim’s valve stem decal and on the ENVE Tire Pressure page.

Models: G23 (700c), G27 (650b)

Tubeless Rim Type: Hookless/Straight-Sidewall
Inner-Tube Compatible: Yes, Only with Tubeless/Tubeless Ready Tire
Inner Rim Width Dimension: G23=23mm, G27=27mm
Tire Size Range Compatibility: G23 ≥ 28mm, G27 ≥ 42mm
Rim’s Maximum Tire Pressure: G23 = 60psi/4.1bar (32mm tire), G27 = 40psi/2.75bar (42mm tire)

Please note that the internal rim width of the G23 is 23mm and intended for use with tubeless ready tires ≥ 28mm with 40mm tires being the primary focus of the design. The G27 features a 27mm internal width that is intended for pairing with tires ≥ 42mm with 55mm/2.0” tires being the target tire width for this rim.

Due to the straight sidewall/hookless design of this rim and inherent high volume design, it is important to understand that not all tires are created equal and for that reason one should pay special attention to the pressure ratings of both the tire and the rim.

G23 – MAX PRESSURE FOR A 32MM TIRE = 60psi/4.1bar
G27 – MAX PRESSURE FOR A 42MM TIRE = 40psi/2.75bar

Models: AG25 (700c), AG28 (650b)

Tubeless Rim Type: Hookless/Straight-Sidewall
Inner-Tube Compatible: Yes, Only with Tubeless/Tubeless Ready Tire
Inner Rim Width Dimension: AG25=25mm, AG28=28mm
Tire Size Range Compatibility: AG25 ≥ 36mm, AG28 ≥ 45mm
Rim’s Maximum Tire Pressure: AG25 = 55 psi/3.79 bar (32mm – 40mm tire) 50 psi/3.44 bar (41mm-50mm), AG28 = 40 psi/3.10 bar (45mm tire)

Please note that the internal rim width of the AG25 is 25mm and intended for use with tubeless ready tires ≥ 36mm with 40mm tires being the primary focus of the design. The AG28 features a 28mm internal width that is intended for pairing with tires ≥ 45mm with 55mm/2.0” tires being the target tire width for this rim.

Due to the straight sidewall/hookless design of this rim and inherent high volume design, it is important to understand that not all tires are created equal and for that reason one should pay special attention to the pressure ratings of both the tire and the rim.

AG25 – MAX PRESSURE FOR A 32MM- 40MM TIRE = 55 psi/3.79 bar41MM – 50MM = 50 psi/3.44 bar
AG28 – MAX PRESSURE FOR A 45MM TIRE = 45 psi/3.10 bar

IN THE CASE THAT TIRE AND RIM MAX PRESSURES ARE DIFFERENT. THE LOWER OF THE TWO PRESSURES BECOMES THE DEFAULT MAX PRESSURE FOR THE SYSTEM.

THE MAX PRESSURE RATING FOR EACH RIM WILL DECREASE AS YOUR TIRE VOLUME/SIZE INCREASES. REFER TO RECOMMENDED TIRE PRESSURE CHART.

TIRE PRESSURE CHART

Everything about the design and construction of your ENVE wheelset exists for this purpose. However, no matter how good your wheelset is, or how talented you are as a rider, running the wrong tire pressure will make you slower and compromise your ride experience. With that in mind, take a look at the tire pressure charts below to ensure that you’re in the right ballpark when it comes to the tire pressures you’re running.
